Abstract

The image of a lonely woman grasping her body, as though in grief, and walking incessantly becomes form and content in Footfalls. As the hierarchy of image and the movement of pacing over the text was explicitly highlighted by Beckett, this chapter attempts to shed light on the understanding of this movement through the binary lens of psychology and psychoanalysis. Pacing is discussed in this chapter as the container of Mayâs life-story and as a memory trigger. The lack of self-identification, obscure life turning points together with the ambiguous language of the play full of repetitions, fragmentations, alienation, overlapping of past and present, lead us into the field of repressed memory. On her solitary journey, Mayâs steps trigger the echoes of her memories and evoke her Motherâs Voice from her âdeep sleepâ. The spectator is presented to a pseudo-fusion between the daughter and her mother; albeit two different entities, they are intertwined through their memories and through their craving for unity. Thus, the trauma of birth is inscribed in this play through the movement of pacing. Incessantly walking nine steps back and forth along a lit path, Mayâs âdestinationâ is to reach the security of her motherâs womb, and/or to return to the state of non-existence.
