Abstract

In Olympiodorusâ Gorgias commentary and Hermiasâ commentary on the Phaedrus, we find the rather surprising claim that Plato was a great defender of rhetoric not only in the Phaedrus but also in the Gorgias. Moreover, both Neoplatonists claim that the two dialogues are in agreement with one another. This chapter details the reasons for this harmonic view of Platonic rhetoric and argues that there is nevertheless a difference to be found in the conceptualization of rhetoric between Hermias and Olympiodorus. This difference can be explained in terms of (their views of) the skopos of the respective dialogues on which they comment.
