Abstract

The chapter discusses two facets of Olympiodorusâ notion of sense-perception: the nature of the universals and substances we grasp in sense perception and the way we are aware of our perceptual activity. For Olympiodorus, perception of substances is connected to the perception of universals because it grasps secondary substances as well. This implies, the chapter argues, that non-rational animals are also able to grasp a certain kind of universal and that this is how they can identify their kin. It further argues that in Olympiodorusâ view sense-perception cannot revert to itself, but the unified cognitive power (âlifeâ) makes it possible for us to be aware of our perceptual activities.
