Abstract

This chapter explores the concept of civilization, whereby Mamardashvili implicitly adhered to a division between civilization and barbarism. The ethical within a person appears contrary to the natural order of nature; we are supranatural in our ethical sense, whether through compassion and mercy or following duty. But we are even more supranatural in our ability to be citizens: i.e. to follow the idea of equality of all before the law and the idea of the right inherent in all from birth. Mamardashvili shows that while these ideas, as well as the ideals behind them, do not capture the minds and hearts of all, they remain a natural formation of any society of citizens, even if not embodied by all members of that society.
