Abstract

This article deals with the hypothesis recently put forward that Hebrews is a Pauline pseudepigraphon, which was added to the oldest extant collection of Pauline letters as an explanatory epistle, as a reading guide or instructional appendix, as if by Paul, for Romans. This premise is sustained with observations that Hebrews shares with Romans not only a proximity in ð⁴⁶ but furthermore corresponding citations and common concepts. The assumption of an allegedly intended (and hence disputable) pseudonymity is questioned, and insteadâalong with othersâthe question is raised whether the actual anonymity of the author and addressees is in itself a literary strategy whose intent needs to be uncovered. This is proposed on the basis of reception-aesthetic theories advanced especially by Wolfgang Iser, but also Umberto Eco, who distinguished between a naÃ¯ve and critical reader. To write a text with blanks or gaps, to deliberately imply a meaning that is not fully tangible is a well-known literary strategy aimed at engaging the reader, who is supposed not only to reconstruct but moreover to construct the potential meaning residing in the text. It seems that the author may have adhered to precisely this strategy. That Hebrews thus speaks of different things than Romans, albeit when citing the same Scripture passage or debating the same concepts, is analyzed with regard to the shared citation of Hab 2:4 (in Rom 1:17 and Heb 10:37â38) and the concepts âMercy Seat (á¼±Î»Î±ÏÏÎ®ÏÎ¹Î¿Î½)â (in Rom 3:25 and Heb 9:5) and âonce for all (á¼Ïá½±ÏÎ±Î¾)â (in Rom 6:10 and Heb 9:26â28).
