William Turner (c. 1510-68) was the true pioneer of natural history in England, but he can also be styled the first English plant-name scholar. Turner was inter alia interested in the regional versus the standard English plant-names of his day Many of the English plant-names mentioned in Turner’s works are first recorded there. Turner’s Libellus de re herbaria novus (1538) was the first scientific botanical treatise published in England. This paper deals with Turner’s contributions to the study of British flora and English plant-names.
