This paper suggests that OE Åspe could indicate any of the poplars growing in Anglo-Saxon England, although usage is expected to have varied at different times and places. It is argued that the poplars present in England at this time were the aspen, black poplar and grey poplar. Trees called Åspe played roles in early medieval England as boundary markers, a medical ingredient, and as a provider of material for post and wattle constructions, as well as for medium to small manufactures.
