Note to the Reader
When quoting from ancient sources, I have used the pagination systems that are considered standard for the various authors. For example, passages in Plato are cited using Stephanus pages, Aristotle is cited using Bekker numbers, and the epitome of Stoic ethics in Stobaeus is referred to using book-page-line numbers in the edition of Wachsmuth and Hense. When discussing Greek terms or phrases, I have transliterated into English those that appear frequently in my text, for the sake of readability. Greek words or phrases that appear only once, or rarely, are left untransliterated. All Greek words in the appendixes are printed in the original language.
