Note on the Text
This research emerges from an analysis of the texts of Antonio Gramsci in their original Italian versions. Waiting for the completion of the publication of the new, complete critical edition of Gramsci’s oeuvre (Edizione nazionale degli scritti di Antonio Gramsci – SNaz; QNaz), I refer primarily, for the sake of consistency, to the previous Italian editions, both of the pre-prison articles (CT, CF, NM, ON, SF, CPC, PV) and of the Prison Notebooks (Q1975). As regards the chronology of the Notebooks, however, I rely on the chronological appendix in Cospito 2011a, which illustrates the chronology adopted in the new edition.
While revising my work, I have greatly benefited from existing English translations of Gramsci’s works (SPW-1, SPW-2, PPW, HPC, PN, SPN, FSPN) and I always refer to them when possible (the reference to the English edition follows the one to the Italian edition). However, when the English version is not available, I have provided my own translation.
As regards the prison writings, I follow the established quotation standards in Gramscian scholarship. I refer to the note of the Prison Notebooks by indicating it with the number of the notebook (Q), that of the paragraph (§) and, if necessary, page numbers.
Moreover, following the criteria established by Francioni (2009 and 2016), I adopt the terms ‘first draft’, ‘second draft’ and ‘single draft’ to classify the different typology of the notes. This terminology supersedes the classification of individual notes adopted in Gerratana’s critical edition (‘A texts’, ‘B texts’, ‘C texts’; cf. Q1975, p. xxxvi). When appropriate, I have also translated excerpts from secondary literature in languages other than English.
