Abstract

Jeremy Howard examines the sensational, but hitherto largely untold story of the acquisition of Prince Chigiâs Botticelli by Colnaghi and its sale to Isabella Stewart Gardner in 1899 through the agency of Bernard Berenson. The painting was spirited out of Italy and hidden for two years in Paris while Prince Chigi was prosecuted for contravening the so-called Pacca Edict preventing the export of works of from Italy. Eventually brought out of hiding, the painting was exhibited triumphantly by Colnaghi in London before being shipped to Boston. The affair became a cause cÃ©lÃ¨bre, prompting debates in Italy and Britain over how best to protect cultural property while at the same time acknowledging the rights of private owners which were to lead to a thorough overhaul of Italyâs archaic export laws and the introduction in 1902 of the first comprehensive national system of listing and export controls since the Risorgimento. Despite the substantial amount of press speculation at the time, the true story of the Chigi Madonna has only recently been revealed thanks to new research in the Colnaghi archives. The article also examines the reasons behind the late nineteenth-century cult of Botticelli in Britain and America and the role played by Colnaghi and Berenson in the formation of Isabella Stewart Gardnerâs collection.
