Abstract

Johann II, Prince of Liechtenstein (1840â1929), an eminent patron of the arts and a progressive and forward-thinking collector, who significantly enriched the centuries-old family collection in the late 19C and early 20C. Based on a thorough analysis of unpublished archival material, foremost the copious correspondence between Johann II and the prominent German art historian Wilhelm von Bode, this paper explores their relationship within the broader context of the contemporary dynamics of the Central European Art market. The correspondence in question covers the period from 1880 to 1925, with more than 70 letters written by Bode to the Prince Bode to the Prince (or his associates â the Princeâs secretary H. Neugebauer and Leopold Walcher von Moltheim) which are preserved in the Princely Archives in Vienna and the additional 28 responses to Bode, now in the Central Archive in Berlin. This comprehensive collection of letters elucidates how Bode served his prominent client and what benefits and provisions he was seeking in return. It proves that Bode was influential in helping Johann II navigate the art market, often acting as intermediary between the Prince and other art dealers, including Stefano Bardini. During the regency of Johann II, the display of the Liechtenstein Gallery had undergone a thorough reorganisation for which Bode also offered his curatorial advice. Furthermore, the letters disclose Bodeâs opinion on some of the most prominent American collectors and their art advisors, specifically Bernard Berenson.
