Abstract

The interest of Joyce for cinema and its potentialities has left important traces in his unique and innovative style. The Joycean legacy, in turn, has played a decisive role in shaping the cinematic language, in his time and after. In my contribution, I consider the importance of JoyceÊ¼s work on the cinema of the French nouvelle vague by bringing to the fore some relevant commonalities between Joyce and FranÃ§ois Truffaut, a key figure of the French cinematic avant-garde. More specifically, I concentrate on the elements that Joyce and Truffaut share in the representation of young characters, and compare the figures of Stephen Dedalus and Antoine Doinel, the semi-autobiographical protagonist of a series of five films by Truffaut. Both Stephen and Antoine aspire at becoming writers, but their talent and creative capacities are repeatedly put in doubt, neglected, and misinterpreted. Their relationship with language, and with the written word in particular, shapes their identities and influences their psychological, emotional, and intellectual evolution. This is characterised by a non-linearity and a centripetal tendency that are in turn reflected in the narrative texture of the works in which Stephen and Antoine appear. By comparing selected scenes form these texts, I highlight some of the main recurring themes, motifs, settings, narrative techniques, and visual elements that greatly contribute to the characterisation of their protagonists.
