Abstract

The eleventh and twelfth centuries saw a burgeoning interest in pilgrimage alongside teachings that related to exile and renunciation in the context of the âreformingâ priorities of new religious groups. In Lucca this was especially the case and is reflected in a hagiographic corpus that is striking for its emphasis on foreign saints and relics. This essay seeks to understand the allure of such remote saints and relics by use of a concept that is prevalent across other disciplines, if currently less so in medieval studies, namely exoticism. Drawing on major trends in exotic theory, it shows how hagiography is a fitting medium for analysis of the âaesthetics of diversityâ, and how in Lucca the foreigner was idealized to become an agent of spiritual change, while links to eremitic communities and emerging houses of regular canons are explored.
