Abstract

This contribution will examine some of the most important facets of urban life that are refracted through the prism of hagiographical texts. It will explore how hagiographies stand as testaments for urban pride and how they serve as records of the socio-political functioning of medieval cities. Hagiographical works thus contribute to our understanding of some of the most significant features that framed urban life:Â lay urban piety, internal city faction, charity, commerce, poverty, and inter-city rivalry. The multi-layered utility of hagiographical works to medievalists will be demonstrated by focusing on a selection of material from southern Italy, one of the most urbanised regions of medieval Europe. At the same time, in order to show the wider applicability of some of the key messages within the hagiographies examined here, this contribution will also connect its key findings to the broader context of medieval European urban life and to the underpinning motif of the âholy cityâ.
