Abstract

The trope or motif of referring to a fictional source text is very prominent in Don Quijote, but also common in narrative before Cervantes. Both the Spanish and Italian chivalric romances of the 15th and 16th centuries use it extensively, together with other metanarrative strategies. As a narrative technique, this goes back in part to ancient Greek and Roman literature, but is developed most extensively in the romances of Medieval French literature, specifically in BenoÃ®t de Sainte-Maureâs Roman de Troie. This paper analyses these tropes and compares their usage in several 12th century romances as well as later adaptations. An appendix contains an inventory of metanarrative tropes in the Roman de Troie.
