Abstract

The exigencies of war forced Elector Georg Wilhelm of Brandenburg and his mother-in-law, Dowager Electress Luise Juliane of the Palatinate, both members of leading Calvinist dynasties, to seek refuge in Lutheran KÃ¶nigsberg, where they died and were buried. This essay examines their funeral volumes. These highly political works provide insight into the Hohenzollern interpretation of the war, the fashioning of Calvinist dynastic identity, and the Hohenzollernsâ efforts to defuse their tense relations with the Lutherans in Prussia.
