This essay considers the West Bohemian region of Upper Lusatia as a case study for the influence of major European wars on a pluriconfessional territory. It argues that two important conflicts, the Schmalkaldic War (1546/7) and the Thirty Years’ War (1618–1648), not only produced ruptures and changes but also resulted in continuities. In most cases, the wars exaggerated tendencies already present. The different religious factions all sought to profit from the wars, but ultimately the region retained its pluriconfessional structure.
