David Horton Smith

Smith is Research and Emeritus Professor of Sociology, Boston College, USA; Honorary Visiting Professor, Centre for Studies of Civil Society and the Nonprofit Sector, National Research University Higher School of Economics, Moscow, Russia; Honorary Visiting Professor, School of Arts and Sciences, City, University of London, London, UK; Visiting Scholar, Flinders University, Adelaide, Australia; Visiting Scholar, Institute for Philanthropy, Tsinghua University, Beijing, China.

David’s Sociology Ph.D. is from Harvard University (1965). He founded (1971) the global Association for Research on Nonprofit Organizations and Voluntary Action/ ARNOVA (www.arnova.org) and the Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly/NVSQ, an SSCI journal. David won the ARNOVA Lifetime Achievement Award for Distinguished Contribution to Nonprofit and Voluntary Action Research in 1993, the first time awarded. He co-received the 1975 national Hadley Cantril Memorial Award for the outstanding U.S. behavioral and social sciences book. He founded (2010) and leads ICSERA, the International Council of Voluntarism, Civil Society, and Social Economy Researcher Associations (www.icsera.org), a global, nonprofit sector, infrastructure organization. He founded the Voluntaristics Review: Brill Research Perspectives, a journal of lengthy survey/review articles (Brill, 2016–).

David is author of Grassroots Associations (Sage, 2000), first co-author of A Dictionary of Nonprofit Terms and Concepts (Indiana University Press, 2006), second co-author of the 2011 State of the World’s Volunteerism Report (UN Volunteers, 2011), and the first Co-Editor and principal author of the Palgrave Handbook of Volunteering, Civic Participation, and Nonprofit Associations (Palgrave Macmillan, 2016). His latest book is S-Theory (Synanthrometrics) As A Theory of Everyone: A Proposed New Standard Human Science Model of Behavior, Especially Pro-Social Behavior (under editorial review). He is author/editor of 13 other books, and over 100 journal articles. His bio has been in Marquis’ Who’s Who in the World since 2001, and he won the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award from Marquis’ Who’s Who. His bio is among 139 in International Encyclopedia of Civil Society (Springer, 2010) as outstanding nonprofit sector leaders and researchers from all nations and history.
