Jenkins’s approach to history is his own, as a discussion of his two historical novels, The Awakening of George Darroch (1985) and Lady Magdalen (2003) reveals. They are set in periods of Scottish history during which Scotland was deeply riven, ideologically and politically, and clearly reflect Jenkins’s concern with Scotland as a whole. In them he confronts some deep-seated myths and preconceptions about Scotland and the Scots. They illuminate many things elsewhere in his fiction; conversely, our understanding of his two historical novels is deepened when they are placed in the larger context.

The main emphasis of the chapter, however, is a discussion of the two novels as individual creations: their ‘worlds’ are distinct from each other, and each stands on its own as a notable modern example of the Scottish historical novel.
