In this most complex of all his later âdisruptiveâ fictions, Jenkins deals with his protagonist Fergus with sly manipulation, confusing the reader with his changing moral perspectives. The chapter discusses these two sides of a character at times surrealistic, at times almost credible, but always leaving the reader with unanswered questions, climactically at the end, when the reader is left to wonder what is the truth of Fergusâs autobiography. This novel raises more questions than it answers, to the extent that we wonder whether Fergus (and his author Jenkins) can at any point be fully trusted, Jenkins anticipating the destabilising postmodernism of later Scottish fiction (especially that of Alasdair Gray). The chapter focuses on Fergusâs divided and almost schizophrenic personas as the recurrent traits of his life, speculating that Jenkins allows him a tragic and a redeeming ending in a deeply ambivalent conclusion whose ambiguity cannot finally be resolved.
