Most of the West German war novels of the 1950s are strongly influenced by the ideological climate of the Cold War. Except for a few pacifist or antimilitarist novels the majority of works of this genre portray the Soviet Union â as under Hitler â again as the main enemy of the German people or the entire âAbendland.â Demonstrations of guilt or shame are, therefore, rare or totally absent.
