Note on Spelling and Pronunciation
Following modern Icelandic convention, ö has been used as the standard symbol for hooked ‘o’ (ǫ) and ø. Thorn (Þ, þ, usually seen in its upper case form) and eth (usually in its lower case form, ð) are used throughout. They are pronounced like the variations of ‘th’ in English, respectively like think, then.
For the names of farms I have tried to be consistent in using the most commonly used standardised spellings but for valleys I have used modern Icelandic spellings, such as Laxárdalur rather than Laxárdalr and Eyjafjörður rather than Eyjafjörðr. For modern Icelandic scholars’ names I have used first names and patronymics in all references.
