Icelandic names are in alphabetical order by first name then patronymic or surname. The alphabetical order is: a á b c d ð e é f g h i í j k l m n o ó p q r s t u ú v w x y ý z þ æ ö ø å ä.
Certain freqently mentioned places, concepts and terms are omitted, e.g. Dalir, Breiðafjörður, Eyjafjörður, goði, goðorð, þing, discussion of which can usually be found via the list of contents or under specific proper nouns, e.g. Eyvellingagoðorð. Individuals without patronymics or matronymics are listed before those with them. References to notes indicate the page on which the item can be found. Most clergy have been identified as such, e.g prestr, djákn.
