Abstract

Great Didymeia was the most important festival in Miletus but, despite its long history, our main sources are honorary inscriptions glorifying the winners from the 2nd to the 3rd centuries AD. They allow us to reconstruct not only the types of competitions, but also some features of religious and social life during this period. Thus, we know that the growth of the Didymeiaâs popularity was due to the granting of eiselastic status to the games by Marcus Aurelius and Commodus. This affected not only professional athletes from other cities, but also local elites, because for them victories of their children in the games were an important element of prestige, and subsequently a sufficient career step for the winners themselves.
