Abstract

The aim of this chapter is to deepen the critical understanding of the reception of the Cento and on what grounds this text was condemned in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, as it ceased to be regarded as proper literature. It examines and questions the pessimistic narrative that emerged during this period, which w as based on speculation rather than historical evidence, claiming that ‘early readers’ rejected the Cento.
