This study of Daoist visual culture is divided into three main parts. The first is on charts, illustrations, and talismans in the Daoist canon and treats of the inner and outer dimensions of Daoist visual culture, including visualization pictures and ritual objects. The second part looks at archaeology, focusing on selected case studies from cliff sites, temples, and tombs. The third part deals with historically transmitted images that were either associated with imperial patronage or were made or viewed by Daoist priests.
