Abstract

The principle of state neutrality in religious matters is closely linked to the lessons learned from the religious wars in the early modern period. The demand that states should also be ideologically or ethically neutral in a broader sense, however, cannot be met even by modern liberal democracies, which is why it makes more sense to speak of ideological generosity rather than neutrality. Likewise, the ideal of the autonomy of the sciences must be specified with regard to their history as well as functions: Modern science is not an end in itself, but in liberal democracies, sciences are not subject to any particular ideological final purpose. After a critical clarification of what state neutrality and scientific autonomy can mean under liberal-democratic conditions, this article applies the implications of this clarification to the relationship between scientific expertise and politics and to recent debates about academic freedom.
