Abstract

The review covers Aotearoa New Zealand’s (ANZ) activities relating to international peace and security for the calendar year 2023 including ANZ’s contribution to the Dublin Declaration on Explosive Weapons in Populated Areas, as well as the continuing discussions on lethal autonomous weapons systems (Part II). Some comments on the Inspector General of Defence Act 2023 are set out in Part III, while Part IV provides an overview of ANZ’s responses to the on-going war in Ukraine. Part V gives an account of ANZ’s initial reactions to Israel’s war in Gaza following the Hamas-led attacks of 7 October 2023. Parts VI and VII provide comments on ANZ’s engagement with the AUKUS Pact and Operation Prosperity Guardian in the Red Sea respectively.
