Abstract

The first section discusses the European concept of landscape and its gradual aestheticization, both at a theoretical level and within contemporary media, tourism, and consumer practices. The opening paragraphs offer a critique of two opposing attitudes widespread in Western modernity: on the one hand, an anti-humanistic stance that denies the aesthetic-phenomenological significance of space, culminating in certain theses of speculative realism; on the other, an idealistic stance that reduces the meaning of space to the subject’s attribution of meaning. This critique clears the ground for a middle path grounded in onto-phenomenology, whose features are gradually unpacked in the chapter. Landscape is understood as the living image of the spatial phenomenon, and its beauty as the reflection of a balance—always to be regained—among political and socio-economic harmony, ecological harmony, and aesthetic-phenomenological harmony. Across the section’s various paragraphs, several reasons are presented to explain why such an onto-phenomenological conception has failed to establish itself convincingly in the modern context. Rather, this context is dominated by a strategic compartmentalization of the meanings of the spatial phenomenon, divided—both in ordinary language and in the highly specialized discourses of contemporary science—into space, place, territory, environment, and landscape. Based on these five meanings, which together form what we may call the “geographical constellation,” this section proposes an integrated genealogy. In particular, with regard to landscape, it shows how its aesthetic foundation—and the consequent separation from the other meanings in the geographical constellation—often results in socially narcissistic approaches to space, culturally feeding practices such as overtourism, the standardization of taste, and homogenized landscape planning.
