Abstract

The third and final section presents the Andean philosophical conception of landscape through a discussion of several 20^th century Peruvian texts (Pulgar Vidal, Ibérico, Mariátegui) alongside commentaries by contemporary anthropologists and philosophers (Estermann, Golte, Zenon Depaz). Theoretical frameworks developed by Viveiros de Castro and Descola are also taken into account, though it is shown that they suit the Andean “sociomorphism” only partially. The thematic introduction of concepts such as pacha, camac, ayllu, and chacra allows us to challenge the categorical absolutism of the modern geographical constellation. In the central paragraphs of the third section, the onto-phenomenological character of Andean aesthetics emerges: pacha, in its aesthetic expressivity, is the stable yet never definitive image of the Earth—metaphysically contingent—to which humans belong without ever being able to appropriate it. The strong aesthetic dimension of pacha permits us to speak of Andean ontology as a landscape ontology rather than a place-based one. This, however, requires a willingness to set the European geographical constellation in motion, revealing the latent semantic potentials and previously unthought interconnections among its constituent concepts. In the final paragraphs, the section attempts a comparison with some of the efforts currently underway within the European episteme to set the geographical constellation in motion. Reference is thus made to the morphological tradition rooted in Alexander von Humboldt, the phenomenological innovation introduced in 1925 by Carl Sauer, the socio-spatial critique of Doreen Massey, the non-representational theory, and the contemporary hermeneutic reconsideration of the concept of place by authors such as Jeff Malpas and Ed Casey. Finally, the section demonstrates why overcoming the aestheticization of landscape—presented as an implication of the modern geographical constellation—now constitutes an urgent and inescapable demand for European culture and beyond, from political, ecological, and cultural standpoints.
