Abstract

Generative AI exists within such potent hype cycles and is now so pervasive it is hard to sustain non-neoliberalised discourse about it, even within academic contexts (perhaps especially within such a non-critical market-driven milieu). Dare has developed a ‘Generative AI Untoolkit’ as a pedagogic counter to the overwhelmingly uncritical mediation of statistical computing (as we should properly call ‘AI’). This work was undertaken as part of the AI Forensics research project at Cambridge Digital Humanities (CDH), University of Cambridge. In this chapter Dare discusses and evaluates a range of arts-based workshops which formed the core of this research, including the collective creation and analysis of machine learning models in workshops at Camberwell College of Arts and at CDH. Such strategies aimed to form a collaborative and non-homogenous set of responses to the material unfolding of machine learning algorithms. Other teaching strategies which will be discussed in this chapter include worldbuilding and collective sonic composition. This chapter proposes that such arts-based approaches constitute a form of political possibility and a means to enable students to experience a counter to uncritical AI hype, to analyse the divisions of labour, environmental damage and regressive epistemology at the core of corporate AI imaginaries.
