Abstract

Despite a shift towards more participatory, egalitarian and creative approaches in qualitative research, researchers continue to yearn for alternative ways of generating knowledge to explore social justice issues and enable real transformation. This chapter introduces Practice As Research as an eruptive paradigm where research is so close to practice that it becomes practice. Rooted in the creative and performing arts, practice as research extends beyond conventional methodologies by positioning practice itself as both the method and object of inquiry. This approach challenges the traditional separation of practice and research, encouraging reflection, creativity, and innovation as foundational elements aimed at fostering equity, inclusivity, and social justice. Responding to neoliberal influences on higher education, Practice As Research re-values and reconnects researchers’ experiences, expertise and knowledge in its dynamic nature aimed at challenging traditional paradigms and fostering real-world impact. Central to this paradigm is the concept of transformation achieved through iterative processes of creation, reflection and theorisation. This chapter explores specific aspects of what matters in ‘good’ practice as research: a practice- and research-focused mind, the ability to theorise, a strong sense of self, an eye for transformation and resilience. It concludes by imagining the future of practice as research in learning and teaching outside of the arts and the creative industries.
