Abstract

Among the most important aspects of Robert Pippin’s work in aesthetics is the connection he draws between art and the philosophy of agency. This essay explores three philosophical questions that are raised by Pippin’s link between the philosophical history of art and the philosophy of agency: (1) at the level of the ontology of art, an account of how works of art are bearers of intentional meaning; (2) an understanding of the specific telos and trajectory of modern art as coping with the challenge of the range of recognitive (and mis-recognitive) issues in action involved in the experience of theatricality; (3) an exploration of the ways in which the Hegelian approach to the shareability of meaning reaches difficulties in modern art and opens up enigmas for interpretation that may pose challenges to the reigning narrative(s) that were used to make sense of art’s development from Rembrandt to Warhol.
