Abstract

While philosophers have of late begun to take seriously the potential of film to contribute to reflection on philosophical questions, Robert Pippin distinctively claims that film itself does philosophy—that “film, some films anyway … need to be considered modes of reflective thought” and suggests, though does not quite endorse, the “radical view” that in the modern period, “philosophy is no longer possible except as art and aesthetic criticism.” In this essay I draw upon Pippin’s cinematic philosophy to articulate the grounds for holding a version of this “radical view,” in particular by attending to and elaborating on the role of the critic (or film-philosopher). I thus maintain that good film (and good art generally), in combination with the effort to understand it, are the modern version of philosophy in the classical sense: the pursuit of wisdom or knowledge of the good.
