Abstract

This paper begins with the core philosophical issue of self-deceptive agency and the way that Pippinâs expressive account of agency both dissolves the philosophical paradox of self-deception and affirms the widespread phenomenon. Second, the paper examines the idea of collective self-deception that Pippin, drawing on Bernard Williams, views as endemic to the modern liberal order. The third issue stems from the Hegelian suggestion that self-deceptive dissembling is the modern counterpart of ancient tragedy. While partly affirming Hegelâs contrast of ancient objective tragedy with modern subjective tragedy, Pippin raises doubts about whether modern idealism can actually do justice to the significance of ancient tragedy. The idealist appropriation of tragedy may turn out to be a philosophical form of self-deception, an imposition of intelligibility on a world averse to the rationalizing mind. The paper concludes by considering how modernity might proceed in full appreciation of the tragic insight.
