Abstract

My aim in this chapter is to develop an interpretation of Nietzscheâs teaching of the âdeath of Godâ that places him in direct (and productive) confrontation with the âMadmanâ who promulgates this teaching in the first edition of The Gay Science (1882). In doing so, I avail myself of Robert Pippinâs welcome attention to what he correctly identifies as the âmelancholic toneâ of the Madmanâs speeches in the marketplace. On the strength of Pippinâs decisive intervention, we may conclude that the Madman neither speaks for Nietzsche nor otherwise contributes positively to our understanding of âthe death of God.â As Pippin demonstrates, the value of the Madmanâs rendition of Nietzscheâs teaching lies in its elaboration of how the âeventâ of the death of God may be experienced by those (e.g., the Madman) who are psychologically and affectively inclined to see themselves as responsible for the commission of an unforgivable offense.
