Abstract

While Schopenhauer explicitly endorses Kant’s idealism, he claims also to go beyond Kant. For, he claims, human beings can know directly our own “inner essence” (i.e., our own nature as thing in itself) as will, in virtue of bodily feeling. Though this claim seems shocking from a Kantian point of view, I argue that Kant is not as far from Schopenhauer as one might think. For his concept of the ‘real’ characterizes a datum surprisingly close to Schopenhauer’s feeling of ultimate reality: a representation neither subjective nor objective, marking the contribution of things in themselves to experience. Thus the debate between Kant and Schopenhauer concerns how to interpret this datum. In line with Robert Pippin’s portrayal of the (post-)Kantian philosophical tradition, moreover, I suggest that this debate comes to an impasse, owing to Kant’s and Schopenhauer’s shared commitment to the finitude of human reason.
