Abstract

Chapter one aims at grounding a social contract from the perspective of various crises. Firstly, various recent crises (i.e. the pandemic, the financial and the refugee crises) are reinterpreted from the perspective of structural paradoxes, while a basis of a new social contract is sought. The steps of elaborating a social contract are reconstructed with the help of a meta-theoretical comparison of Hobbesâ and Rawlsâ theories. The foundations of a new social contract are outlined by combining the results of these initial analyses: as the contemporary crises are inseparable from the structural paradoxes caused by unconstrained systems based on universal principles of justice, the alternative social contract aims at preventing the system paradoxes by critically examining their universal principles in a âtrial of particularityâ (based on the moral philosophies of Derrida and Levinas). These conclusions ground the social contract for an era of permacrisis: the particularistic, impossible moralities are to be applied on those paradoxical structural mechanisms, which are approved by universalistic principles of justice, yet cause suffering. The next six chapters explore the details of the social contract by mapping the structural paradoxes and the related sufferings in the context of intersubjective, inter-objective and discursive networks.
