Abstract

Human proclivity for survival lies at the very essence of our collective social being and this desire is tested supremely during hours of crisis. This paper delves into the historical and political occurrence of the Bengal famine of 1943 which had immediate and far-reaching impact on the people of Bengal and the colonial empire but does not engage from the point of view of the available economic and political iterations and representations. It seeks to understand how people adapted to this crisis and regulated their eating habits; how new cuisines and fares developed because of this occurrence; how these make-shift recipes became a part of our collective memory and therefore culture; if these gastronomical practices determined food choices of the generation of people that immediately followed the survivors of the famine through a post-memory lens.
