Abstract

In this article I read two novels by contemporary diasporic writers of historical crime fiction, Sujata Massey’s The Bombay Prince (2021) and Abir Mukherjee’s Smoke and Ashes (2018), to see how they both repurpose the visit of the Prince of Wales, Edward, in 1921–22 to India as the backdrop for their narratives. This historical visit is used by each author to reactivate the intertwined politics of memory and history through the popular genre for entirely different ends. Even as the genre allows challenges to the dominant ways of reading the past to be articulated, the visions of the past that it conjures and the idioms that are deployed to conjure them contrast with each other.
