Abstract

This edited volume offers the first collection of academic essays in memory studies from India, engaging with diverse topics such as identity, materiality, and historical trauma across various sociocultural contexts. The essays explore how collective and individual memories shape narratives, sites, and events in India’s complex historical landscape, examining subjects like the Bhima Koregaon memorial, the Bengal Famine, Partition trauma, and the lives of marginalized communities, including the Dalits and the Indian Jewish community. Utilizing an interdisciplinary approach combining literary, cultural, and affect theory, this volume interrogates the role of memory in reconstructing forgotten histories and shaping contemporary discussions on social justice and identity. Through this collection, the volume aims to contribute to the global field of memory studies by situating India’s historical, political, and cultural memory narratives within broader frameworks of remembrance and erasure, offering fresh scholarly insights and fostering further research in this emerging academic discipline.
