Abstract

Dendrochronology (tree-ring analysis) supplies an independent scientific dating of objects made from wood. For a selection of late medieval ecclesiastical furniture in Norway, this is no exception. In recent studies, tree-ring analysis has revealed a wealth of additional information, such as the region where the trees grew, which was examined in the context of the material evidence for trade in timber in northern Europe. Observations of the timber for these works also allowed insight into the procurement and choice of raw materials, and the quality of wood available to the craftspeople tasked with making these objects.
