Abstract

This chapter focuses on the two most important forms of communication in the Old Norse religion and Christianity, respectively, which are blÃ³t (most often translated as sacrifice, but also worship) and bÃ¦n (prayer). BlÃ³t was a series of rituals that included elaborate speeches, which was replaced with a brief, concise bÃ¦n in Norway and Iceland after the introduction of Christianity. The source situation is problematic, particularly pertaining to communication with the divine in the Old Norse religion. Except for a few miniature sculptures, no full-scale statues of pagan gods have survived. However, there are sufficient written sources that are independent of each other to show that people communicated with their gods through prayers and gifts, asking for help and favours in return. Moreover, statues presumably made of wood, bearing a human likeness, were thought to be representatives of the divine. The source situation is better for insights into Christian practices. There is reason to believe that there was some kind of continuity in communication with the divine, because communication was controlled by the elite, and people turned to pagan statues and Christian sculptures in similar ways.
