Abstract

George Floyd’s murder brought the world’s attention to the lived realities of Black people and our experiences with racism. The grim statistics associated with being a Black, Brown, or an indigenous person to contract COVID-19 serve as yet another reminder of the physical, emotional, economic, and spiritual toll of racism on their health. As citizens and scholars of color, both faculty and doctoral students contend with systemic and everyday racism, all while simultaneously engaged in the rigorous tasks that accompany doctoral work in academic institutions that present their own systemic challenges. Within this vacuum, there exists an opportunity to develop sacred spaces infused with racial and cultural micro-affirmations to combat the daily barrage of microaggressions and adverse health impacts associated with being in such environments. The easing of such tensions, even temporarily, has the capacity to fortify existing coping strategies and create a natural flow of opportunities to develop other forms of positive resistance.

Towards this aim, the Black Women’s Spirituality (BWS) research laboratory and consultation group were created. This chapter explores the development of BWS, an innovative biopsychosocial and spiritual approach aimed at reducing stress and enhancing the wellbeing of Black women pursuing their doctoral training in clinical psychology at a Christian institution. Key considerations in developing the BWS approach are examined, providing valuable insights to guide the creation of future models. Additionally, four existing models that have effectively supported Black women in academia are highlighted, serving as references for developing supportive environments. The chapter concludes by offering an overview of the BWS model, exploring its vision, mission, and implementation strategy while underscoring its transformative potential in promoting the holistic wellbeing of Black women.
