Abstract

Forces of colonialism, cultural nationalism, communism, Christian socialism, liberalism, and capitalism were contested in the Korean peninsula during the Interwar period of the 1920s. This chapter investigates the YMCA’S responses to these multifaced forces in its navigation for national reconstruction in colonial Korea. With a focus on the 1928 Jerusalem World Missionary Conference, the YMCA helped launch a nation-wide rural program for farmers to plant the seeds of democracy and to weather the encroachment of communism in a divided Korea. This study examines the contentions, issues, contours, and orientations of Korean Christianity and the influence of the international missionary movement through the mire of nationalism in colonial Korea. Historical scholarship investigating the intersection of Korean Christianity and national history from a sociopolitical angle and nationalist perspective began to emerge in the late 20th century. This chapter looks at the conjunction of Korean national history, the history of Christianity, and international currents that laid the foundation of public diplomacy for Korea’s liberation and for unity among nations.
