Abstract

This paper explores the period immediately preceding the main focus of the book through a study of the later career of the Swiss-American church historian and theologian Philip Schaff (1819â93) and of the revival of the Evangelical Alliance after the American Civil War, in which he played a leading role. In particular Schaff was the driving force behind the organization of the Allianceâs major international conference in New York in 1873, which can be seen as something of a Protestant riposte to the Vatican Council of 1870. The visionary aspirations of this event were not wholly fulfilled, and the 1880s saw the Evangelical Alliance develop on narrower and more nationalistic lines. Schaffâs own thinking, however, was an intriguing and prophetic counterpoint to this trend, as he sustained and developed his wider ecumenical ideas and moderated his hostility to Roman Catholicism. At the very end of his life in 1893 his paper on âThe Reunion of Christendomâ presented to the World Parliament of Religions in Chicago envisaged a framework in which Catholics and Protestants could be brought together in a future comprehensive church.
