Abstract

The 1920s was a crucial decade when attempts and reflections were made by governments and agents at different levels of society to solve international conflicts and clashes in a globalizing world. As a part of the global evangelical movement, the Chinese Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) at the time played a crucial role in bridging China and the world through transnational collaborations. This chapter examines the work of Yu Rizhang (also known as David Z.T. Yui, 1882–1936), the general secretary of the Chinese YMCA. It shows that under Yu’s leadership, the Chinese YMCA endeavored to integrate China into the global community through international networks and transnational communications. Yu approached China’s national crisis by emphasizing Christian values on justice, equality, and universal brotherhood. This vision of Christian internationalism served as the theological rationale behind his transnational activities as a public diplomat. His efforts at internationalizing China’s situations through transnational platforms were aimed at abolishing the unfair treatment of China and restoring equality between nations. An exploration of Yu’s work in the 1920s sheds light on how the relationship between Christianity, nation, and the world was appropriated, negotiated, and reconstructed in a politically and culturally dynamic period.
