Abstract

Beginning in the early nineteenth century, American Protestant missionary efforts in the Islamic world were often dependent upon the work of British missionaries and imperial agents in India and the Mediterranean. More systematic attempts to evangelize Muslims emerged in the late nineteenth century, building on international ties among Protestants in Europe, North America, Africa, and Asia. Then in the early twentieth century these efforts coalesced in the ecumenical missionary movement—a largely Protestant movement that combined aspirations for global Christian unity with socio-political notions of internationalism. Islam was among the topics of conversation in ecumenical gatherings at Edinburgh (1910) and Jerusalem (1928) and was the focus of conferences for missionaries to Muslims in Cairo (1906), Lucknow (1911), and a series of Middle Eastern regional meetings in 1924. Focusing on the Arab Middle East, this chapter considers how American and British Protestant missionaries negotiated between their own national and ecumenical allegiances as they sought to change the Islamic world, and how local Christians and Muslims who encountered missionaries responded with their own forms of nationalism and internationalism. This study shows that Christian missionaries’ nationalist allegiances were often linked to ecclesial identities, while Arab nationalists upheld solidarity between Christians of diverse Middle Eastern traditions and between Christians and Muslims.
