Abstract

After the Great War, visionary leaders of Protestant state churches determined to rebuild Christendom by bridging the nationalism that separated them. Committing themselves to international “Christian fellowship,” Bishops William Temple (Anglican), Nathan Söderblom (Church of Sweden), and Charles Brent (U.S. Episcopal) sought to reconstruct the social fabric of Europe. They held conferences, notably the Conference on Christian Politics, Economics and Citizenship (C.O.P.E.C.) and the World Conference of Life and Work, that established transnational networks, crafted policies for social reconstruction, and promoted inter-ecclesial cooperation. They rebranded their efforts to rebuild Christendom as “ecumenism,” a public theology of transnational Christian fellowship that provided both a rationale and a set of practices for Christian society. Although the Life and Work movement has been researched as a constitutive element of the church-based ecumenical movement, its forgotten origins in establishmentarian concerns have caused its importance for European unity and social welfare to be neglected.
