Abstract

Around 1910, Norway was one of the countries with the highest number of missionaries per inhabitant in the world. The experience and identity construction of Norwegian Lutherans had its own characteristics, because Norway was not a colonizing nation (at least not in the direct sense) but had struggled for independence herself.

How was this different historical experience reflected in the literacy practices and educational system of Norwegian missionary educators? How did they teach history and theology? How, where, why, and when did they interact with other Protestant missionary societies? How did they react to emerging national movements? The article will focus on the Norwegian background as well as on the interactions in Madagascar, where Protestants cooperated closely in their protests against politics of French colonial rule.
